If you do not have points in the main grid, and even if you do not have a GPS connected, you can still go to the map window by using the drop down menu:

 

 

This will then take you to a blank map window.

 

You can then enter a location to view through the "Zoom To" option, and entering the Latitude and Longitude to view. The map will appear with the desired location at it's center.
